Smoothtraxx interviewed Christos Kedras the very succesfull producer and owner of Kapa Records.

1. Whould you mind giving us some information about who you are and where you come from?

My name is Christos Kedras and I am a producer & DJ in the house/electronic genre. I was born in Thessaloniki but I live in Los Angeles.

2. It is your first gig here in Greece invited by Smoothtraxx. Also you have been here about a month on vacation. How do you see the house scene here in Greece, and how is it compared to Los Angeles?

Greece has a far-reaching reputation for its amazing nightlife. During my month here I had an opportunity to visit clubs in Athens, Thessaloniki and Corfu. From one hand it is impressive to see all these people out until the early hours. However from the other hand I was a bit disappointed with the overall energy. Most clubs stick to the guaranteed profit of a very specific recipe and there is lack of true clubbing culture revolving around music & dancing. Of course this is not just a Greek phenomenon, the scene in Los Angeles is also dominated by a similar approach. In general the commercialization of nightlife is a global trend and in each city only a few efforts dare to break the mold. Smoothtraxx is one of them!

3. After "Sweet Temptation" (great work) you have a new one, "Choice"!  Tell us about "Choice". I think the lyrics are yours. Where did you get the inspiration from?

Thank you for the nice words. I do write music & lyrics for all my tracks. "Choice" came to me while returning home from the Miami Music Conference (WMC 2009) last March. This was a very successful WMC for Kapa Music, we hosted an amazing party at the Setai Hotel, we sponsored a series of one-on-one radio interviews with some of the world's biggest DJs, we had two tracks in the traxsource top-10 (Sweet Temptation being one of them). This was the result of our hard work but also of our determination and the way we chose to persist during difficult times. I was thinking about all these and I felt the desire to convey a positive & optimistic message, that we always have a choice to do the "right" thing and there is light at the end of the tunnel!

4. You also have your own radio show, the beat philosophy radio hour. Do you think that it is a good vehicle for promoting you and your work?

The main reason for the show is to present some of the amazing new music that I stumble upon daily. There are a lot of great tracks being released all the time. Beat Philosophy is a way of promoting them and also sending kudos to the producers, it is a way of telling them to keep up the good work!

5. What is your opinion about house scene, you thing that it has a future?

The way we experience house music is about life & passion. This kind of expression is like art, it is beyond fashion & trends. Indeed some times house becomes more popular (on the radios, the charts, the clubs), some times it falls out of grace (as it has been recently), but the soul, the spirit, and the sound of house never die, they are always kept alive by people like you & me and all the other great DJs & producers around the world.

6. You also have your own label "Kapa Music", started in 2007, focusing on quality house music, combining real lyrics, live musicians etc. Why did you take the step to build your own label?

In recent years we have seen a proliferation of computer-generated dance music that lacks soul and as a result cannot touch a broader audience. Our goal in creating Kapa has been to create house music that can speak to many people, not just the dedicated fans, house music that conveys a message. Hence there is an emphasis on lyrics and more "traditional" music arrangements including live instruments etc.

7. What else should we expect in the future from Kapa music? You have any plans?

There are a lot of great things in the works for the future. Both my partner Martin East and I will release our first full-length albums in the coming year. We are also planning for a bigger & better presence in Miami next March (WMC 2010). In addition my personal plans include a number of brand new singles, co-operations with more great international producers and hopefully more gigs in Greece!  :-)

8. What do you think about the Smoothtraxx project?

Smoothtraxx is one of the few really good house music efforts in Greece. Both the radio station and the parties promote true house music culture. This is very important not only for the scene in Greece but also globally. The Smoothtraxx team should always remember that the current moves in both directions: they are ambassadors of the global house music culture in Greece but they are also ambassadors of the Greek love & passion for house music internationally.

9. As a last question, how would you like to see Christos in a few years from now?

Uh, this is a tough one! How about spinning with you guys at some beautiful Greek island with all our friends around dancing & having a great time?! ;-)
